The Great Sun of Knowledge
Muhammad ibn Salih ibn Hani’ narrated to us, Ibrahim ibn Ishaq ibn Yusuf narrated to us, Harun ibn Abdullah narrated to us, Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi narrated to us, Harb ibn Shaddad narrated to us, on the authority of Yahya ibn Abi Katheer, al-Hadrami ibn Lahiq narrated to me, on the authority of Muhammad ibn Amr ibn Abi ibn Ka’b, on the authority of his grandfather Abi ibn Ka’b - may God be pleased with him - that he had a granary of dates and he would find them decreasing, so he watched it one night and saw someone like a young boy who had reached puberty. He greeted him and he returned his greeting. The man said, “Are you a jinn or a human?” The man said, “Rather a jinn.” The man said, “Show me your hand so I can see it.” Then he saw the hand of a dog and the hair of a dog. The man said, “This is how the jinn were created.” The jinn said, “I know that there is no man among them stronger than me.” The man said, “What brought you?” The man said, “We were told that you love charity, so we came for a share of your food.” The man said, “What will protect us from you?” He said: Recite Ayat al-Kursi from Surat al-Baqarah: “Allah, there is no god but He, the Ever-Living, the Self-Sustaining.” He said: “Yes.” He said: “If you recite it in the morning, you will be protected from us until the evening, and if you recite it in the evening, you will be protected from us until the morning.” He said: “My father.” So I went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) and informed him of that, and he said: “The wicked one has spoken the truth.” This hadith has a sahih chain of transmission, but it was not narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim.
