In order to draw at Craven Cottage on the first Saturday of the 2022–23 Premier League season, Liverpool had to come from behind twice.

Aleksandar Mitrovic scored twice, once from the penalty spot and once with a header at the back post, but it wasn't enough to give Marco Silva an improbable victory to start the year.

Liverpool at times found it difficult to handle Fulham's ferocity, but they will be pleased with the resoluteness of their performance, which demonstrated that their ability to come from behind to win games from last season has not been diminished by the brief summer break.

The much-anticipated appearance of Darwin Nunez, who provided Liverpool the figurehead up front they had been lacking with Roberto Firmino, in the second half proved successful.

Following an early period of sustained pressure from Liverpool through Nunez, Fulham began to lose steam as the game wore on and appeared to be about to buckle under the siege. As it was, they got their lead back thanks to a Mitrovic penalty after Virgl van Dijk knocked him down. The Brazilian had little opportunity after the Serbian's penalty was placed low to Alisson's left.

Liverpool was compelled to respond once more. They earned 20 points from downing positions last season, and Mohamed Salah's goal after shoddy Fulham defending has already given them their first point this year. On a bright afternoon in west London, a rarity.

The Reds, who last season battled title-winners Manchester City all the way, fell behind when Aleksandar Mitrovic beat Trent Alexander-Arnold to head Fulham in front following a wonderful cross by Kenny Tete.

After Fulham had taken the lead, Luis Diaz had a goal disallowed for offside before looping a shot against the post.

In a nail-biting game, Mitrovic was fouled by Virgil van Dijk, and substitute Nunez tied the score with a close-range flick to mark his Premier League debut. Fulham then took the lead from the penalty spot.

Following a pass from Nunez, a £64 million acquisition from Benfica, Mohamed Salah equalised from close range after Mitrovic recovered from his fall and beat Alisson from the penalty spot.
In the fifth minute of stoppage time, Jordan Henderson came very close to winning the match.
