Saudi Arabia offers advice on avoiding food wastage throughout Ramadan
The General Food Security Authority (GFSA) of Saudi Arabia has provided some advice to assist those who are fasting prepare more environmentally friendly Iftars and meals in order to reduce food waste during the holy month of Ramadan.

The advice is a part of a social media campaign that the GFSA's National Program for Reducing Food Loss and Waste in the Kingdom began last week
People are encouraged to keep good and healthy consumption habits by the campaign, which seeks to increase awareness about food security and prevent food waste.

According to GFSA, the rate of food loss and waste in the Kingdom is around 33 percent, with an estimated $10.66 billion (40 billion riyals) in yearly food waste costs, according to a statement published by the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).

The campaign advises people to arrange the meals they want for Iftar first, choose a variety of foods but in smaller amounts, and store the leftover food in airtight containers to be consumed later.

It also urged individuals to strike a balance when preparing food and to avoid creating unnecessary
especially when it comes to rice, in large quantities.

The campaign stated in a post on its Twitter account that "Rice is a main meal and it's wasted in large quantities," adding that the 31 percent food waste rate for rice.

Dates are the same way.

Dates are a staple during Ramadan and are frequently consumed to break the fast. The campaign does point out that more than 36 thousand tonnes of dates are thought to be wasted yearly.

The campaign also suggests that making a grocery list before going to the store is a smart move that will help people purchase fewer unnecessary items.

It aids in "reducing time [spent] at the store, saves money, and [helps] stop food waste."..
