Chinese President Xi Jinping received a phone call from US President Joe Biden on the evening of July 28, and the two leaders had frank communication and exchanges on China-US relations and issues of mutual interest.
President Xi noted that the world is currently witnessing a continuous development of two trends, one towards turmoil and the other towards transformation, with the development and security deficits increasingly emerging. Facing a world of intertwined transformations and turmoil, the international community and the peoples of the world aspire for China and the United States to play a leading role in maintaining world peace and security and promoting development and prosperity in the world. This is the responsibility of China and the United States as two major countries.
Xi stressed that considering China the most important adversary and the most serious challenge in the long run as a result of viewing and defining Sino-US relations in terms of the strategic competition is a misjudgment of China-US relations, a misunderstanding of China's development, and a misleading of the two peoples and the international community. The two sides need to maintain communication at all levels, activate the existing channels of communication well, and promote cooperation between two sides. The current situation of the global economy is fraught with challenges. China and the United States should keep in touch on important issues such as coordination of macroeconomic policies, maintaining the stability of global industrial and supply chains, and ensuring global energy and food security.
Acts against economic rules such as delinking and cutting chains do not help revitalize the US economy, but rather make the global economy more fragile. The two sides should also push for calming regional hotspots and contribute to ridding the world of the Covid-19 pandemic as soon as possible and extricating it from the impasse of stagflation and the dangers of depression and preserving the international system with the United Nations as its center and the international system based on international law.
President Xi mainly explained China's principled position on the Taiwan question, stressing that the Taiwan question has clear historical implications and that the two sides of the Straits belong to one China is also an obvious fact. The three joint communiques between China and the United States are a political commitment made by the two sides, and the one-China principle is the political foundation of China-US relations.
We resolutely reject the "Taiwan independence" separatist activities and the interference of outside forces, and we will never leave any room for the "Taiwan independence" forces of any form. The position of the Chinese government and people on the Taiwan question is consistent and consistent, and resolutely safeguarding China's national sovereignty and territorial integrity represents the unwavering will of the 1.4 billion Chinese people. The will of the people is irresistible, and whoever plays with fire will inevitably burn himself. We hope the US side understands this and should adhere to the one-China principle in word and deed and implement the three joint communique between the two countries.
For his part, President Joe Biden said that today's world is going through a critical phase. The cooperation between the United States and China serves not only the interests of the two peoples but also the interests of all the peoples of the world. The US side hopes to maintain an open dialogue with the Chinese side to enhance familiarity, avoid misunderstanding and misjudgment, and seek cooperation with China in areas of common interest, while properly managing and controlling differences. He reiterated that the one-China policy of the United States has not and will not change, and the US side does not support "Taiwan independence."
The two presidents also exchanged views on issues including the Ukraine crisis, with President Xi reiterating China's principled position.
The two presidents considered that this phone call was frank and in-depth, and they agreed to keep in contact, and assigned the work teams of both sides to continue communication and cooperation in this regard.
