Does Harry Kane Deserve to Win the Ballon d’Or ?

Harry Kane has finally reached the top of world football.

Harry Kane is officially the winner of the 2026 Ballon d’Or, and there is no doubt that this is one of the biggest achievements of his career. The Bayern Munich and England striker received the award in London on October 26, beating Kylian Mbappé and Lamine Yamal in the final ranking. He also became the first Englishman to win the men’s Ballon d’Or since Michael Owen in 2001.

Harry Kane Has Finally Reached the Top

For years, Kane has been regarded as one of the best strikers in world football, but the Ballon d’Or had always been missing from his collection. This time, however, his numbers were simply too strong to ignore.

Kane’s achievement is especially impressive because he has remained at the highest level for many years. His consistency in front of goal has made him one of the most reliable forwards in European football.

The Numbers Behind Kane’s Victory

Kane’s biggest argument is his incredible goal-scoring record. During the 2025/26 campaign, he scored 73 goals for club and country in all competitions. With Bayern Munich, he helped the club retain the Bundesliga title and complete a domestic treble. He also finished as the Bundesliga’s top scorer for the third consecutive season.

His European numbers were impressive as well. Kane scored 14 goals in the Champions League as Bayern reached the semi-finals. These numbers show why many people believed he was the strongest candidate for the award even before the ceremony took place.

What About the World Cup?

The World Cup also played an important role in Kane’s Ballon d’Or case. He scored six goals during the tournament and captained England to the semi-finals. Although England did not win the competition, Kane remained one of the team’s most important players.

This matters because the Ballon d’Or is not decided only by goals scored for a club. Performances for the national team and success on the biggest stages can also influence voters. Kane’s World Cup campaign therefore strengthened an already impressive case.

But Was Kane Clearly Better Than Mbappé and Yamal?

This is where the debate becomes interesting.

Kylian Mbappé finished second in the voting, while Lamine Yamal came third. Both players had strong arguments of their own, which makes the result far from a simple decision.

Mbappé remains one of the most dangerous forwards in the world, while Yamal has continued to establish himself as a superstar despite his young age. Yamal also won the Men’s Young Talent of the Year award, showing just how highly he was regarded during the ceremony.

Some fans may therefore feel that either player deserved the main prize. That is completely understandable. The Ballon d’Or is an individual award, but football is difficult to measure with statistics alone.

Why Kane Deserves the Award

In my opinion, Kane has a very strong case for winning the Ballon d’Or. His biggest advantage is consistency. He was not brilliant for only a few weeks or in one competition. He produced goals throughout the entire season, helped Bayern win major domestic trophies and continued to perform for England.

There is also something important about his overall game. Kane is more than a traditional striker who simply waits inside the penalty area. He can drop deeper, create chances and link up with teammates while still being an outstanding finisher.

That combination makes his numbers even more impressive. When a player can score at such a high rate while also contributing to the build-up, it becomes difficult to argue that his success is based only on the quality of his teammates.

My Final Verdict

So, does Harry Kane deserve to win the Ballon d’Or?

I would say yes.

That does not mean Mbappé or Yamal had weak cases. On the contrary, both players were excellent and could have been reasonable winners. However, Kane’s combination of goals, consistency, trophies and international performances gives him a convincing overall case.

At 33, Kane has finally achieved the individual honour that had escaped

him for so long. He is now the fifth Englishman to win the men’s Ballon d’Or, joining Stanley Matthews, Bobby Charlton, Kevin Keegan and Michael Owen.

Whether every football fan agrees with the decision is another question. But looking at what Kane achieved over the past year, it is difficult to say that his Ballon d’Or victory was undeserved.
