When Mohamed Salah scored for the fourth time in as many games versus City this season, Pep Guardiola's reigning champions—who entered the match eight points behind Mikel Arteta's team—appeared to take a severe hit to their title chances.

Erling Haaland couldn't play for the hosts because of a groin injury, but Julian Alvarez scored the equalizer from a cross from Jack Grealish in his place.

At the start of the second half, City caught their opponents off guard, and subsequent close-range goals from De Bruyne and Gundogan gave them breathing room. 16 minutes from time, Grealish was set up by De Bruyne to cap an outstanding performance for England.

Even with Haaland out, City started strong and fluidly, but the visitors scored the first goal against the flow of play. Trent Alexander-Arnold blasted a pass behind City's high line as he continued his exhausting pursuit of Grealish. Manuel Akanji obstructed Diogo Jota before he could locate Salah and rifle home.

Their equalizer was provided by the kind of fantastic team move that City would pepper the afternoon with. Riyad Mahrez sprinted in from the right and found Gundogan, who assisted Grealish in passing the ball so that Alvarez had a simple tap-in opportunity for his 13th goal of the year.

During halftime, the game was still tight, but two minutes into the second half, City completely turned the tide. Mahrez was sent rushing down the right after a rapid change of play, and it was a very Liverpool goal that sealed the deal. His low cross avoided a fatigued Alisson, and De Bruyne's finish caused chaos in the Stadium.

Liverpool's defensive lapses seemed inevitable as City exerted crushing and unrelenting pressure. Alexander-Arnold stopped Alvarez's left-footed shot after he created some space in the box. Gundogan took a touch and buried the rebound after his goals on the last day of the previous season crushed Liverpool hearts.
