According to Biden's press secretary, LA city council members who engaged in racist discourse had to "step down."

President Joe Biden feels that all Los Angeles City Council members who participated in a racist chat that was made public this week should "step down," according to White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre on Tuesday.

The President is pleased to see that one of the people who was present for that discussion has resigned, but they all need to. He thinks they ought to all step down. It was disrespectful and disgusting the language that was used and accepted during that conversation. At the briefing on Tuesday, Jean-Pierre remarked, "They should all resign.
Nury Martinez, a member of the Los Angeles City Council, resigned as the body's president on Monday after making racial statements about another councilman and his Black child. Martinez took a leave of absence from the council on Tuesday.

The comments were a part of leaked audio that The Los Angeles Times was able to obtain when it was posted anonymously on Reddit. The audio contains a conversation between Martinez, Councilmen Gil Cedillo and Kevin de León, and President of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor Ron Herrera, the publication claims.

The council members emphasised the need to "guarantee that heavily Latino districts would not lose economic assets" in the once-in-a-decade process when discussing the redistricting designs, according to the Times.

The discussion then turned to Councilman Mike Bonin. In videos Martinez is heard narrating a conversation in the leaked audio that the Times has published and saying, "Bonin thinks he's f**king Black."
The Times reports that Martinez claims Bonin "handled his young Black son as though he were an accessory" when he appeared with his son on a float in a Martin Luther King Jr. Day parade. According to a father's Facebook post, the youngster is 8 years old.
Martinez reportedly added, "Parece changuito," or "He's like a monkey," in reference to Bonin's child, according to The Times.

Martinez issued an apology for the remarks on Monday. There are no justifications for those words, and I accept responsibility for what I said.
